My Response to Cyber Monday

The "Christmas Machine" is a short video I made in response to the madness that ensues every year after Thanksgiving. While I love the holidays, I truly dislike the blatant ways in which retail outlets try to increase their bottom line. People get killed on Black Friday by shoppers who must get the best deal.  The internet slows to a crawl on Cyber Monday.  Employees are forced to come in to work at three or four in the morning, and work long hours while being underpaid by corporate giants.

I created this with flip video footage from the Macy's window fronts on 34th Street, and music by Nine Inch Nails from the album "Ghosts".  The music was used legally as it falls under Creative Commons licensing.

I agree with your post in so many ways, the sheer commercialization of the holiday has actually made it all quite depressing. Parades, Santa, elves and angels are all quite fun and part of the season. Middle of night sales for "limited quantity" items seems to bring out the worst in humanity. Commercial demand that starts being drummed up in September only leads to mental stress by Thanksgiving!

Its really amazing that people can be lead like sheep for that one purchace.

Here is my therory on this subject; A month before the holiday season starts all these commercial outlets raise prices on specific items that will go on a heatic ride come black monday. I suspect some up by 100 % Then when Black Monday comes they bring the original price back to give the consumers the idea that they are getting a great deal. To me that is so Messed Up.

I have never been on for these big holiday shopping frenzies because i usually make my own gifts to give , yes it may take some time but in the long run it is , i feel, more appreciated and treasured.

I often wonder if i would fall victim to this inhumane display but as of yet i have not, nor do Ithink I ever will

PS

Thank you all for your comments. I'm glad you liked the video. For me, the holidays are about family and friends, not dvd players, and cheap laptops. Despite all the commercialism, this is a great time to be in New York as there are so many activities going on.
