Nor'easter Destruction, Wantagh, March 2010

A nor'easter tore through Long Island on March 13th, 2010, causing massive amounts of damage in the town of Wantagh, New York.  Large trees were uprooted and destroyed cars, homes, sidewalks, and other property.  Power lines were also pulled down leaving an estimated 100,000 people are without power.

Unfortunately, there was at least one fatality caused by a falling tree.

Makes your heart sink to see this level of destruction. I wish the people all the best in getting things back to normal. Thank you for sharing these powerful images.

Chris,

Hate to see destruction like this, but you did document it well. I hope, at least, none of this damage was to your own property? Man that must have been some storm...

David, Glenn, I agree, this is never something you want to see or have to photograph. I feel for everyone who was affected. Glenn, we were very lucky as two trees fell in our yard and just missed the apartment. We had no heat or power for a while but after seeing the surrounding area, I am not complaining. The latest update was that six people lost their life from falling trees. My thoughts are with their families. The photography was the easy part. The trick was to watch out for all the live electrical wires that were lying around on the street.

You have documented the tragic outcomes very well. God bless all of those who have suffered. Nature can be disastrous.

Was that all from Westbury?? I work in Oceanside, and it seems like the damage was almost comparable. We even lost power at work and had to move our operations to another facility in Rockville Centre. Glad to see you and the wife are ok!!

Chris, good shots. May God help them. People who died may God rest their souls in peace. The images are very touchy and a lesson to all that we also have to go one day to Almighty. Pray that nobody should face such death.

Hi Chris,

Incredible devastation, I cannot even imagine the moments people have to endure over there. I'm not familiar with such big storms in my part of the world (Romania) therefore looks almost surrealistic to me. Great documentary photography, Chris

Bravo Chris !

you vividly captured one of natures unfavourable moments with mankind, showing the world apart how much love, peace

and kindness needs to prevail as a requisite level of life by nature, perhaps in reconciliation or a pardon for such wrath.

Prayers, love, peace, joy and the best to all.

Amazing! Vermont got hit with some very bad weather that destroyed entire towns last year in a hurracain. Took a bad toll on people and business that are still effected. I'm curious though after reading your photos were picked up by the AP and used in news papers across the globe how u got your photos out there for them to want to use and buy them?

Thanks Mike, it's a good idea to have your local AP office phone # handy in case you capture images that may be press worthy.
