Using live view and a macro lens it's possible to manually focus on the finest details where auto focus would likely fail. Of course the choice of background is very important, and I positioned myself to take advantage of the dark shadows in the distance.
This image is also a great example of how a correct histogram can actually look wrong depending on the subject and chosen exposure. At first glance most of the data is stacked up on the left side. Normally, this would not be what you want to see. Yet, since there is so much black in the frame, it's actually correct!
