In my workshops and photo presentations I like to share a simple but effective tip to help people see beyond the obvious. The trick is to simply walk around the object and observe with your eyes. At first glance, all you'll see is a rusty dumpster. Yet if we take the time to look closer through the viewfinder, we may find more to it.
In the photo below, the texture and the various layers of color bleed through to form something that could pass as an abstract painting. Each year as it weathers the typical abuse of a trash receptacle, it will continue to change. Depending on your point of view, it can be grotesque, beautiful, and maybe even a bit of both simultaneously.
