Several of my private students talk of the training methods they attempted before working with me. They mention photo workshops with "famous" photographers who were nothing more than tour guides bogged down with too many participants. The result was essentially a glorified photo walk with someone pointing out tourist sights. These events are typically heavily marketed by recognizable sponsors but fall short on actual technical insight.
Other clients recall stories of pompous camera store salespeople who doubled as pseudo educators on commission. This inevitably turns into a sales pitch for fast lenses, camera bags, and overpriced accessories with no actual photography training whatsoever.
I highlight these stories in an effort to prevent others from falling into the same trap. Before investing your time and money, be sure you fully understand the mentor's qualifications. Do they have a website with documented professional experience, client testimonials, credentials?
I am a licensed photography teacher and have helped thousands of students from all over the world learn how to use their camera and follow their dreams. My passion for teaching has brought me from New York to Rome and beyond. One-on-one lessons are packed with information and students come away with a deeper understanding of how to control their camera in just one lesson. For group workshops, I keep the number of participants to a small number so everyone receives personal attention while capturing great photos.

Hello Chris, Like to thank you for a awesome day out and great tips. I've been practicing my metering and compositions. Thank you. - Henoch
Hi Chris, I greatly appreciated everything that you taught me for a couple of reasons. First, I will be able to capture many timeless moments of my family in a way that I have always longed for. Secondly, I've always had a creative side of me that has been searching for a way to best express itself. The camera felt like the artistic tool that would be perfect only I wasn't sure and had doubts when I first got it and experimented on my own. But with your masterful instruction, I realize that it's exactly what I've been looking for. With your help I have actualized a creative avenue that may not have otherwise been realized. So thank you for doing what you do. I look forward taking better and better pictures with time. Sincerely, Jeannette
Hey Chris, Thank you again for all your help. I learned a lot, and I can't wait to start practicing taking pictures this weekend. - Talk soon, Marvin
Hi Chris, I have watched videos and read manuals but you made learning my particular camera incredibly easy. I appreciate the notes you gave me to reference and I can say that after the one lesson I will be taking quality pictures going forward. I will be practicing and applying what I learned and hope to meet up in the spring to photograph some new locations. Thanks again, Scott
Testimonials from Group Workshops
I had the BEST 9 days and I wish to thank you very much indeed for being such as excellent instructor. I learnt heaps and enjoyed every minute of our trips to Siena, Florence, Cortona, San Giovanni - the early morning shoots and the wonderful evening location in Florence. My understanding of my camera and the knowlege of what it is capable of is all thanks to you. Your advice of cropping - not too much sky etc - was a valuable lesson to learn and certainly improved my pictures. -Gabriella
Thanks to Chris and Sue for a fabulous day in DC. I learned so much in one day about photography as well as my camera. I learned to use many features of my camera that previously I had no idea how to use. Chris keeps these workshops to small groups for personalized attention and boy did we ever get personal attention. It seemed like every time I snapped a pic, Chris was looking over my shoulder waiting to critique the shot and offer suggestions as to how to make the picture better. It was an awesome day and I highly recommend signing up for one of the workshops. - Peter
I attended the Brooklyn Bridge workshop last year and highly recommend it. Chris is an excellent instructor and I got some very nice shots, including the photo I use atop my Facebook timeline. - Kevin
Hi Chris: The workshop was great, and I'm glad we did it! I still have to go through all my pix, and then I'll send my favorites. Thanks for yesterday! Best, Rich
Hey Chris. Just looked at my camera and saw that I took 511 photos. I am uploading them now, and will send you some of my favorites. Thanks again, I had an incredible time! - Christine
Chris, just wanted to thank you for the Fall Foliage Workshop. I learned so much in such a short time about both the operation of my camera and how to best take photos. I came home with some beautiful photos; some family members have already asked me to print out copies for them to frame. Being such a novice I was a little hesitant at first but your style and manner made learning extremely easy (kudos to Sue also for scouting out some wonderful spots). I look forward to more workshops. Last night I even tried shooting some shots at my son's game using entirely manual mode. Thanks again. - Peter
Dear Chris, I am so delighted with my photos. Having to do "long exposures" forced me to learn my camera and I now have many more choices to select from. You have such a gentle way of encouraging your students. - My best, Suzanne
