Out to Simplify

I found this simple but charming bouquet at an outdoor table near West 30th street in Manhattan. The shallow depth of field only kept a small portion of the flowers in focus to create the soft aesthetic I was striving for.

Later on that day while walking the High Line, I came across this terrific burst of color set against a black awning.

From lovely flowers to these industrial landscapes, it was quite the shift in subject matter. Still. I found the interaction between man made materials and natural light to be quite a fascinating display.

Ironically, the more I set out to simplify, the more sophisticated the design of the photos became.

"Elegance is achieved when all that is superfluous has been discarded and the human being discovers simplicity and concentration: the simpler and more sober the posture, the more beautiful it will be." - Paulo Coelho
